How will you contribute?

The Biodiversity Monitoring and Assessment (BIODIV) research group at LIST focusses on innovating the way data is sampled in the field to evaluate the spatial and temporal dynamics of living organisms.

As part of these activities, we have developed an underwater camera system called NewtCam (see here: https://doi.org/10.1111/2041-210X.70097).

Originally targeting amphibians (especially newts), the NewtCam has demonstrated its ability to detect many other groups of species such as snakes, fish and macroinvertebrates (water beetles, water bugs, water scorpions, crayfish, snails, leeches…).

Among the project’s objectives, the 50 first devices have been spread out worldwide to be field trialed (including UK, Sweden, Luxembourg, France, Austria, Germany, Macedonia, Romania, Canada, Brazil, Indonesia, Pakistan, Hong Kong…) with the aim to assess detectability of a range of target species.

As a trainee, you will be invited to support the BIODIV team in the processing of videos and images collected around the world.

You will contribute to providing insights into the potential of this innovative tool to improve the survey and monitoring of various organisms in freshwater ecosystems.

To broaden your professional experience, you will be invited to join other field and lab activities of the BIODIV team (i.e. biodiversity monitoring).

The tasks of the trainee will be carried out in close collaboration with the team involved in such activities and under the coordination of the trainee’s supervisor.

Scientific questions to be addressed and specific objectives to be fulfilled will be set with the trainee at the beginning of the traineeship.

At the end of the traineeship, the trainee will produce a scientific report including the material and method used and the results describing the tasks and analyses that were implemented.
