How will you contribute?

The surge in electronic devices in our environment is largely supported by printed electronics. Compared to conventional electronics, printed electronics enable simpler and faster fabrication. They also allow for the creation of mechanically flexible devices and support fabrication on substrates with complex shapes.

At LIST, we have been inkjet printing various types of electronic devices, including piezoelectric energy harvesters (https://doi.org/10.1039/C9TC05228C), haptics (https://doi.org/10.1002/admt.202200147), and antennas (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.xcrp.2023.101685). While inkjet printing is a well-developed method, it has its drawbacks, such as the limited availability of electronic inks and challenges in printing on substrates with complex shapes. To address these limitations, we recently began working on a complementary method called aerosol jet printing.

In this project, we will develop aerosol-jet printed antennas. The work will be highly multidisciplinary, involving the development of the printing process for Ag and Cu conductors, the electrical characterization of the printed structures in the GHz frequency range (using a vector network analyzer), and the printing and characterization of a Bluetooth antenna.

You will be mainly in charge of:

  • Development of the aerosol-jet printing process for Ag and Cu inks
  • Microstructural characterization of the printed structures
  • GHz-range characterization of electrical properties
