EIF Posting

The European Investment Fund (EIF) is seeking to recruit for its Guarantee Services Division – Guarantee Portfolio Services Unit, at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a Trainee.

Duration: 5 months & Starting date: October 2025

Specific Post Environment:

EIF provides access to finance to SMEs through sophisticated debt and equity financial instruments, implemented via a wide range of selected financial intermediaries across EU and neighbouring countries (e.g. banks, guarantee institutions, leasing companies and microfinance institutions). The Guarantee Services Division, part of EIF’s Client Services Department and the broader Investment Office, is responsible for the implementation of middle office activities for EIF’s guarantee instruments.

As a part of the Guarantee Services Division, the Guarantee Portfolio Services Unit (hereafter, “GPS”) is responsible for onboarding, monitoring and processing of data reported by EIF’s financial intermediaries in the context of over 1,000 distinct guarantee and counter-guarantee deals. The team is actively engaged in supporting the intermediaries in their operational tasks, playing a central role in client onboarding, and is tasked with ensuring completeness, accuracy, and timely integration of the periodic data into EIF’s internal systems.

Overall objective:

As part of the GPS team’s ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency and data-driven decision-making, the trainee will contribute to the development of a data-driven algorithm (hereafter, dubbed the “Operational Score”). This model will use a variety of internal data sources to generate a composite index that attributes a complexity score to each report processed by the GPS team, therefore supporting task prioritisation and guiding a more informed decision-making.

Your overall objective will be to contribute to the design and testing of the model, its implementation via the relevant data-analysis tool (i.e. Alteryx) and visualising the results through a dashboarding tool (Tableau or PowerBI), gaining hands-on experience in data modelling, automation, and internal tool development.

Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of the Senior Officer, you shall:

  • Contribute to the design and setup of the Operational score model/ algorithm – including by performing the “back-testing” of its initial outcomes and improving the algorithm as a result;
  • Implement the said algorithm using the relevant data-analysis tools available (i.e. Alteryx);
  • Prepare the data visualization based on the algorithm outcome using available dashboarding tools (i.e. Tableau and/or PowerBI).

Expected outcome:

  • Support the preparation and finalization of the Operations Score model’s methodology;
  • Implement the said algorithm using the relevant data-analysis tool (Alteryx);
  • Implement a data visualization dashboard based on the said algorithm using the relevant dashboarding tools (Tableau and/or PowerBI).

Qualifications:

  • University degree (minimum bachelor’s degree) in primarily Data Analysis and/or Modelling, Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, or any other related disciplines, with an exposure to Finance or Risk Management subjects would be considered an advantage;

Key requirements:

  • Experience, of academic and/or practical nature, in data analysis and/or modelling (e.g. statistical analysis, risk modelling, financial modelling, etc);
  • Any previous exposure to data analysis and visualisation tools, such as Alteryx, Tableau and PowerBI;
  • Any previous exposure to Power Platform (namely PowerAutomate, but also PowerApps) would be considered an advantage;
  • Any previous exposure to automating tasks in an administrative or financial environment would be considered an advantage;
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English. Good command of another EU language would be an advantage.

Competencies:

  • Very strong problem solving and analytical skills;
  • Abstract and out-of-the-box thinking;
  • Good drafting and synthesis skills;
  • Proactivity, capability to work autonomously under given objectives and ability to organise own work effectively even under time pressure;
  • Good interpersonal skills, open-minded and resilient;
  • Attention to detail, while working under pressure and meeting deadlines.
