About the job

Description

Internship contract – 6 months | Fulltime/40h | From 01.02.2025 on | Belval

Are you passionate about research? So are we! Come and join us

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

How will you contribute?

Detecting space objects from the ground — including both natural (e.g., meteoroids) and human-made objects (e.g., satellites, spacecraft) — is critical for space research, astronomy, satellite tracking, and spacecrafts collision avoidance. However, noise from human activities, atmospheric interference, sensor artefacts, and light pollution make this task challenging.

In this context, this internship consists in investigating and testing the latest AI approaches to improve the detection of space objects by filtering noise and unwanted artefacts. For example, different techniques involving and/or combining recent advances in objects detection (YOLOv11), Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) and even Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) will be tested and evaluated. The focus will be on techniques that are frugal (limited computational resources), robust and interpretable.

You will be mainly in charge of:

  • Review the state of the art about the application of Generative AI for objects detection in noisy data.
  • Design and implement relevant AI-driven approaches in Python libraries and/or notebooks, by considering two use-cases:

o Astronomical images captured by LIST and used to train AI models in collaborative research projects (MILAN2, https://www.list.lu/fr/recherche/projet/milan2/) .

o Radio data captured by the Belgian RAdio Meteor Stations (BRAMS), to detect and study meteors with radio forward scattering techniques; this project is led by the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (https://brams.aeronomie.be/) .

  • Document the source code and write a report describing the technical / scientific contribution.
  • If applicable, the results may lead to an academic publication.
