The European Investment Fund (EIF) is seeking to recruit for its Secondaries Unit, part of the Secondaries & Portfolio Solutions Division in the Equity Investment Department of the Investment Office, at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a Trainee.

Duration: 5 months & Starting date: October 2025


Specific Post Environment:

You will operate within the Private Equity sector, across the segments of Secondaries market operations.

The Trainee will primarily support the Secondaries team with tasks related to sell-side secondary transactions. The Trainee will be supervised by a senior officer within the Secondaries team, part of the Secondaries & Portfolio Solutions Division in the Equity Investment Department of the Investment Office.

The internship project aims to provide the Trainee with hands-on experience in collaborating directly with the investment teams on transaction preparation, execution and related project management.

Throughout the internship, the Trainee will have the opportunity to engage in detailed analysis and due diligence processes, gaining valuable insights into the intricacies of secondary transactions. The Trainee will also assist in preparing comprehensive transaction documentation and presentations, ensuring that all materials meet the high standards required for successful deal execution.

Additionally, the Trainee will participate in regular team meetings, and contribute to discussions on market trends, divestment opportunities, and portfolio management strategies. This exposure will provide the Trainee with a well-rounded understanding of the process and the critical role that the Secondaries team plays within the broader organization.

By the end of the internship, the Trainee will have developed a strong foundation in secondary transactions and will have gained practical experience that will be invaluable for future career in the investment industry.

Overall objective:

Your overall objective will mainly be to:

  • Proactively develop and initiate secondary sales to enable EIF to terminate prior investment programmes (mandates) that still have remaining fund positions.

Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of the senior of the team, you shall:

  • Provide support for the workstream on secondary sales, which is crucial for the preparation of mandate terminations.
  • Assist in sourcing data from various sources, including Business Object and/or eFront extractions, quarterly reports, and others.
  • Contribute to the analysis of portfolio sales, as well as the preparation and execution of sales.
  • Support in the analysis of secondary market reports, focusing on volume and pricing, and prepare in-house market reports.

Expected outcome:

  • Initiate and manage the launch of secondary sale portfolio transactions.
  • Provide input on portfolio pricing, including the valuation of underlying fund positions, as needed.
  • Collect data from various sources and prepare the data room for transactions.
  • Review and update key documents, such as the call for expression of interest and process letter.
  • Develop expertise in the private equity and secondary markets, as well as in asset valuation.

Qualifications:

  • University degree (or on-going studies at advanced stage) in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related disciplines;
  • Post-graduate qualifications (with a focus on corporate finance) would be a distinct advantage;
  • CFA, CAIA or similar professional qualification would be a clear benefit
  • Strong understanding of Excel and capacity to utilise and develop complex financial valuation models;
  • Good financial analysis skills, with a particular focus on company fundamental analysis, valuation and pricing (Multiples, DCF, comparables, etc.);
  • Ideally familiar with CapitalIQ, Pitchbook or similar financial databases;
  • Excellent knowledge of English (oral and written); any additional EU language will be an advantage.

Competencies:

  • Interest in company valuation, financial models, and analysing data of the private equity sector;
  • Problem solving approach and initiative;
  • Excellent team spirit;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and presentation skills;
  • Very good interpersonal skills.
