Are you passionate about research? So are we! Come and join us
The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

How will you contribute?
Identification and quantification of degradation products of organic contaminants by LC-HRMS.
In the framework of projects and collaborations dedicated to the assessment of water pollution, the EMA (Elemental and Molecular Analysis) group of LIST has developed a set of analytical methods for the quantitative analysis of organic contaminants (pesticides, pharmaceuticals) in water samples, mostly based on LC-MS/MS. The detection by Multiple Reaction Monitoring offers a very high level of sensitivity and allows the simultaneous analysis of many target substances in a single method.
However, an additional layer of complexity is induced by the fact that many organic contaminants, especially pesticides, are rapidly degraded in water and soils, leading to transformation products that can still be harmful for the environment.
These transformation products or metabolites are of increasing concern and must be detected to get a proper evaluation of water contamination. Among the exponentially increasing number of transformation products, many are not yet described in the literature and are thus still “under the radar” during monitoring campaigns.
The main objective of the internship is to develop analytical methods and workflows based on LC coupled to High-Resolution MS (QTof, Orbitrap), for the untargeted detection and identification of degradation products.
A significative effort will be done to develop data treatment processes (MS interpretation, database matching) to facilitate the implementation of untargeted screening methodologies at LIST.
