The European Investment Fund (EIF) is seeking to recruit for its Portfolio Solutions Unit of the Equity Investments, at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a Trainee – Equity Valuations

Duration: 5 months & Starting date: September/ October 2026


Specific Post Environment:

The Trainee will be part of the Portfolio Solutions (PS) team which is part of the Equity Investments Department in the Investment Office. In the context of portfolio management, the main objective of the PS team is to manage and monitor the portfolio of the EIF equity investments and to carry out valuation related tasks, more specifically the valuation of assets held by the EIF programme focused on the Business Angel investments (European Angels Fund).

Overall objective:

More particularly, the overall objective for the Trainee will be to:

  • To support the development of a comprehensive, reliable and accurate database to be used for the valuations. The database will contain essential target company and co-investment vehicle level data carefully selected for valuation purposes.
  • To enhance the valuation quality by systematically extracting distinct information from internal investor reports using AI technologies and to integrate AI-driven methodologies where applicable to improve data accuracy and analytical depth.


Responsibilities
:

Under the guidance of the senior of the team, you shall:

  • Gather qualitative and quantitative information on Business Angels and underlying companies from a diverse range of data sources.
  • Assist the Portfolio Solutions team in developing back testing model, analyse portfolio returns and conduct comparative valuation of investments that fall under the same asset class, location and industry by creating Pitchbook, Capital IQ and AI-based reports.
  • Assist the Portfolio Solutions team with the annual depositary exercise to verify the ownership of the Business Angels investments.

Expected outcome:

The internship project aims to provide the Trainee with hands-on experience in collaborating directly with the investment teams and consultants at EIF working on the asset valuation. The Trainee shall contribute to the project, specifically supporting the following:

  • Valuation exercise of the investments held by the European Angels Fund and the completion of the audit.
  • Reconciliation between valuation files and responses of the depositary.
  • Creation of automated files to follow up on valuations, and the improvements to the related models.

The traineeship will allow the Trainee to learn how to interpret key investment metrics such as ROI, IRR, cash burn and market multiples and will support the skills in analytical reasoning, financial analysis and stakeholder communication.

Qualifications:

  • University degree (Bachelor minimum) in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related disciplines. Post-graduate qualifications would be a distinct advantage;

  • ACCA or similar professional qualification would be an advantage;

  • Good financial analysis skills, with a particular focus on company fundamental analysis, valuation and pricing (Multiples, DCF, comparables, etc.);

  • Familiarity with Capital IQ, Pitchbook, Orbis or similar financial databases;

  • Prior exposure to AI-based tools related to either company valuations and/or to data related workflows;

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including capacity to utilise and develop complex financial valuation models) and good knowledge of other Microsoft application tools (Word, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint);

  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English. Good command of Spanish and/or German would be an advantage.
