The European Investment Fund (EIF) is seeking to recruit for its Corporate Strategy, Market Assessment & Research Division at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a Trainee – Market Assessment and Research.

Duration: 5 months & Starting date: September 2026


Specific Post Environment:

The Corporate Strategy, Market Assessment & Research Division (CS&MA) is part of the Strategy Department within EIF’s Finance and Strategy Office. The main objective of the division is to support the EIF’s business development and strategic decision-making processes through strategic and market assessments, surveys, and applied research. The Trainee will particularly contribute to market assessments and surveys. The Trainee will also contribute to other CS&MA tasks as needed.

Overall objective:

Your overall objective will be to:

  • As member of the MAR team, support design and execution of two waves of the EIF’s Equity Survey & Barometer. Conducted by the MAR Unit of CS&MA, these are surveys of venture capital (VC) and private equity mid-market (PE MM) fund managers – the largest of this kind on a pan-European level.
  • Contribute to market assessment projects in relation to SME financing topics.

Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of the senior members of the team, you shall:

  • Support the team in the execution of the two EIF Survey waves by contributing to, inter alia, the questionnaire design, the programming of the latter in the online survey tool, the monitoring of incoming responses while the survey is in the market, etc.

  • Support the team in the analysis of the resulting survey data and in the preparation of the relevant survey reports.

  • Support the team in data-related and market information projects on relevant SME financing topics through, inter alia, desk research, accessing commercial VC/PE databases and EIF information sources.

Expected outcome:

  • Two reports in the form of published EIF Working Papers in relation to the two aforementioned EIF Survey waves, expected to be published in October 2026 and January 2027 respectively.

  • Presentations and/or notes, datasets and dashboards in relation to the specific market assessment projects.

Qualifications:

  • University degree (preferably at Master’s level or ongoing postgraduate studies at advanced stage) in the field of Finance or (Business) Economics, or other fields indicating familiarity with data analysis and interpretation, as well as ability to develop digital solutions.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and good knowledge of other Microsoft application tools (Word, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint).

  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English. Good command of another EU language would be an advantage.

Key requirements:

Technical/Professional Knowledge & Skills required:

  • Some knowledge and understanding of EIF’s mission, activities and products, markets and legal frameworks relevant to EIF business, as well as of policies and priorities in that context.

  • Familiarity with working with data and other modern digital solutions, including AI tools.

  • Familiarity with PE/VC investment practices will be considered an advantage but is not a prerequisite.

Experience required:

  • Ease with IT applications and data analyses, reports and presentations.

  • Thorough knowledge of standard Microsoft M365 applications, in particular Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Experience in working with modern visual analytics and/or business intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI) is an advantage.

  • Familiarity with statistical software packages (Stata) and/or Python programming is an advantage.

  • Additional knowledge of data retention and/or data exploring tools would be a plus.

  • Knowledge in the field of process and workflow automation (e.g., Power Automate) would be a plus.

  • Prior experience in banking/finance would be a plus.

The Trainee is expected to be fully dedicated to the internship. Undertaking any commitments in parallel that might interfere with the Trainee’s work for the EIF would be strongly discouraged.
